Nowhere else in Africa combines a world-class safari with a genuinely exceptional coastline so easily. A ninety-minute flight from the Maasai Mara puts you on the sand at Diani Beach, which means a safari and beach holiday in Kenya costs you almost no travelling time.

The classic structure is three to five nights on safari followed by four to seven nights on the coast. Starting on safari and finishing on the beach is the better order: the early mornings and long game drives are energising at the start of a trip, and the coast is the perfect place to unwind afterwards.

Alongside Diani, we use the Watamu Marine National Park north of Mombasa for snorkelling and diving, and the Lamu archipelago for travellers who want somewhere slower, more historic and entirely without high-rise development. Each has a different character and we will recommend according to the holiday you have in mind.

For families this combination is close to ideal. Children who have spent a week tracking lions are usually delighted to spend the next one in the water, and the flights are short enough for even young children to manage comfortably.
