This itinerary is built around how children actually experience a safari. Drives are shorter and timed to the coolest hours. The vehicle is exclusively yours, so there is no waiting for other guests and no pressure to stay out longer than the children want. And the camps we use genuinely welcome young guests, with family tents, bush cooking, tracking activities and guides who are instinctively good with children.
We begin in Laikipia rather than the Maasai Mara. The private conservancies there allow off-road driving and walking, which keeps children engaged, and the wildlife, rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra and often wild dog, is easy to find and rewarding to watch. Distances are short and the days can be flexible.
We then fly to the coast for four nights on Diani Beach. Children who have spent four days tracking lions are usually delighted to spend the next four in the water, and the flight is short enough for even young children to manage comfortably.

Day 1
Arrival in Nairobi
Met on arrival and transferred to a family-friendly hotel. Optional afternoon visit to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage, which children adore.

Fly to Laikipia
A short flight north to the Laikipia plateau. Game drive to camp, lunch, and a gentle first afternoon drive with a bush picnic.

Day 3
Tracks, signs and the small things
A morning walking safari with a Maasai guide, learning to read tracks and identify birds. Shorter and slower than an adult walk, with plenty of stops. Afternoon at the pool and an evening drive.

Day 4
Rhino and elephants
A morning tracking rhino with a conservancy ranger, then an afternoon with the elephant herds. Optional bush cooking lesson for the children before dinner.

Fly to Diani Beach
A morning flight to the coast and a short transfer to your beach hotel. The afternoon is for the pool and the sea.

The reef
A glass-bottom boat trip or snorkelling on the reef, with the afternoon free for the beach.
